Energy Code Testing

Blower Door Test

Measure the airtightness of your home to meet energy code requirements and improve overall efficiency.

What Is a Blower Door Test?

A blower door test is a diagnostic tool used to measure the airtightness of a building. A powerful fan is mounted in an exterior door frame and used to pressurize or depressurize the house. By measuring the airflow required to maintain a specific pressure difference, we can calculate the air leakage rate of the building envelope.

Why It Matters

Energy Code Compliance

Required by the 2015 IECC (Section R402.4.1.2) for new residential construction in Colorado.

Lower Energy Bills

Identifying and sealing air leaks can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs year-round.

Improved Comfort

Eliminating drafts and cold spots creates a more consistent and comfortable indoor environment.

Better Indoor Air Quality

Controlled ventilation reduces infiltration of outdoor pollutants, allergens, and moisture.

How It Works

1

Preparation

All exterior doors and windows are closed. Interior doors are opened to allow air to flow freely throughout the home.

2

Fan Installation

A calibrated blower door fan is mounted in an exterior door frame and sealed to prevent air bypass.

3

Pressurization

The fan depressurizes the home to a standard pressure of 50 Pascals, simulating a 20 mph wind on all sides.

4

Measurement & Report

Airflow is measured and recorded. Results are compared against the IECC code limit and a compliance report is issued.
